Thanks to you both, and happy cake day. The main difference between the Russian and Chinese SKS is how the barrel is attached. The Russian method being generally preferred and argued more accurate. But really the difference is probably just arguing the size of the barn they each will hit.

The machining and woodwork is faaaar nicer on my Chinese sks compared to my Russian ones. Granted, I believe my Chinese unit was non-issued (probably new production and not surplus), and my Russian ones look like the were tossed in the back of a dump truck between refurbishing and being packed away for storage. They both go bang, though.

The Chinese SKS is a copy of the Russian original and was introduced in 1956. There are many differences between the two rifles, but the main difference is that the Russian SKS is built with a much higher quality than the Chinese SKS. The Russians use better materials and have more experience in manufacturing firearms.

Only two differences I can see between my Chinese SKS and my brothers Russian SKS is the position of the rear sling mountin point (Chinese one is on the left side of the stock; Russian one is on the bottom of the stock) and the bayonet (Chinese one has a "pig-sticker"; Russian one has a blade). There's some minor differences, some stamped parts.

Of all the SKS rifles I own, Russian, Romainian, Yugo, Albanian, and Chinese, the Chinese is at the bottom fit and finish wise. Accuracy is a little better in the European rifles too. YMMV. Communism running rampant! I own two Norinco's.. that said, I'd gladly trade either of them for a good Russian!

The Chinese spike is usable as a monopod, which is slightly better than using a cow. Still a mark above the Russian blade. The Chinese version loaded it's mag slick as anything the Russian SKS had some balky "corners" slowing things down. Tried Chinese surplus Russian commercial and Yugo commercial. No differences.
